Carl Brewer

by Carl Brewer last modified 2014-03-18 14:44

Carl coached our daughter (JW17) for 15 months during her first and second season on the track.  During that time we found him to be a committed coach who had a real passion and expertise for coaching sprint track cycling.  We have found Carl to be particularly good at providing relevant and detailed feedback to our daughter, both in terms of her skills but also other information derived from his ability to technically and mathematically analyse data.  As the parents of a junior rider, Carl’s open and honest communication with us was always greatly appreciated, making sure we, our daughter and himself, were all ‘on the same page’ when it came to her training.  Without a doubt, Carl was always intent on doing what was best for the rider, both on and off the track. His ability to work well with riders is perhaps best demonstrated by the success of both his junior and masters riders at recent 2014 National Championships.

Carl is a qualified level 2 Cycling Australia coach and a level 1 strength and conditioning coach, who has been coaching riders in Melbourne since 2003. Carl specialises in working with track sprinters and has coached road, criterium and event riders (AUDAX Alpine Classic, 'Around the bay in a day' etc) at all levels, from beginners to A grade and elite juniors.  Carl is an assistant coach with the National Talent ID (track sprint) as of February 2010, assisting Hilton Clarke and as of July 2010 is the NTID Victorian Track Sprint Assistant Coach.  Carl ownes the aboc PowerHaus Strength and Conditioning gym which is used by many of his sprint cyclists.  Carl has been a state coach for the Victorian track team at the senior and junior Australian Titles every year since 2010-2011 and has assisted at Junior Worlds camps, coached at Oceania championships and many NTID and sprint development camps.

Carl raced B grade in Eastern Combine road and criterium events, and has finished two Melbourne to Warrnambool road races, 3 'Around the bay in a day' rides (including the awful weather epic in 2003) and the 200km AUDAX alpine classic in 2006 (43 degrees up Mt Buffalo! ouch). Carl was always too heavy to survive road races with hills in them.  Carl occasionally races B grade at Blackburn club track races and C grade at DISC when he has time but never misses a round of the summer sprint series.  He used to enjoy motorpaced events, or anything ending in a sprint and has a marked distaste for wheelraces and anything where he can't hide and wait for a sprint. Carl also has held an MTBA licence but confesses to being a complete gumby on a mountainbike and is yet to actually start a MTB race.

Carl worked for six years at Cycle Science in Mitcham initially in retail but finally specialising in bike fits.

Carl splits his time between training, coaching and IT support and consulting, maintaining the aboc website, running and promoting the Summer Sprint Series and occasional sleep!  On his off days he works as a kayaking instructor for Andrew Farrance Kayaking, just to keep out of mischief.

Carl has far too many bicycles.

Read Carl's random pontifications on his blog page if you're bored.
